30/07/08: John Rosanvallon, President/CEO of Dassault Falcon Jet, Joins Embry-Riddle Board of Trustees

Daytona Beach, Fla., July 30, 2008 – John Rosanvallon, president and CEO of Dassault Falcon Jet, a world-leading manufacturer of large-cabin business jets, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the world’s leader in aviation and aerospace higher education. A veteran of the aerospace industry, Rosanvallon has spent his career since 1975 in leadership positions in sales and marketing with Dassault Aviation and Dassault Falcon in the United States and France. In 2003, he was appointed president and chief executive officer of Dassault Falcon Jet and executive vice president for civil aircraft at Dassault Aviation.

18/07/08: Thales encourages young students into science and engineering careers

On Saturday 19 July judges from Thales UK and STEMNET, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network, will be formally assessing solutions from a number of schools as part of ThalesÂ’ contribution to the MoDÂ’s Grand Challenge. The assessment and judging activity will take place in the Thales Pavilion at the Farnborough International Airshow, where around 60 school children aged between 12 and 14 from Amersham School in Buckinghamshire, Chilton Trinity Technology College in Bridgwater in Somerset and Woking High School in Surrey will present their solutions and get a chance to experience the excitement of the flying display from the best view at the Airshow. The Schools Challenge initiative is a part of Thales’ ongoing commitment to encouraging schoolchildren and students into science and engineering careers, and focuses around the teams designing unmanned ground vehicles and addressing the issues of visual signature management (camouflage!)

09/06/08: Virgin Atlantic to go twice daily to Hong Kong: 100 new cabin crew jobs to be created

Virgin Atlantic, one of the world’s leading long-haul airlines, is to increase its frequency between London Heathrow and Hong Kong from daily to twice a day. The extra services will lead to the creation of 100 new cabin crew roles. The new, second service will boost the number of seats available on the booming Heathrow-Hong Kong route and open up fresh opportunities for those passengers wishing to connect to other cities in China, or the wider Far East. It will also provide greater flexibility for stopovers, for those passengers wanting to break their journey if travelling to or from Sydney. From 28 October 2008, flight VS238 will operate three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and then operate daily from 4 December 2008. VS238 will depart London Heathrow Terminal 3 at 16.00, arriving in Hong Kong at 12.30pm the following afternoon.

19/05/08: Embry-Riddle Flight Teams Repeat success in National Competition

Daytona Beach, Fla., May 19, 2008 – Once again, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University dominated the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s (NIFA) Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) held May 4-10 at Middle Tennessee State University in Smyrna, Tenn. The Golden Eagles flight team from Embry-Riddle’s Prescott, Ariz. campus captured first place and the Eagles flight team from the Daytona Beach, Fla. campus placed third in the national competition. It was the first back-to-back national championship for the Golden Eagles, which took the top spot last year at NIFA SAFECON, as well as in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2003, and 2005. The Eagles of Daytona Beach took first in 1992. In this year’s competition, which involved more than 400 pilots from 31 aviation programs around the nation, the Golden Eagles earned a total of 465 points. Following them in the rankings were the University of North Dakota, with 349 points, and Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach team, with 332 points.

Melbourne, Fla. (Apr. 16, 2008) – FlyContract.com, the largest online aviation contractor directory for pilots and flight attendants looking for contract and permanent employment, has added new features and capabilities to its website, including an interactive map, forum section, and training offers. FlyContract.com’s interactive map functionality utilizes Google interactive maps to allow users to better visualize where pilots and flight attendants are located in relation to each other and the user. After searching for a pilot by aircraft or narrowing a flight attendant search by state or training, users can click a “view map” link to display pinpoints of the contractor locations from the search. When the user moves the mouse over the pinpoints, a synopsis of each contractor listing is displayed, showing name, photo, location, price, and a link to the full profile and availability.

17/03/08: Embry-Riddle, Tomlinson Aviation Conduct FAA Helicopter Research Flights

Daytona Beach, Fla., March 17, 2008 — Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, in conjunction with Tomlinson Aviation Inc. of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Systems & Electronics of Chicago, has completed the first of a series of FAA-sponsored helicopter research flights demonstrating technology intended to enhance the safety and commercial viability of helicopters in the United States. Funded with a grant of $620,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration, the project is evaluating Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) equipment that uses onboard sensors to monitor flight conditions and the health of helicopter components. The prototype HUMS hardware was developed by Systems & Electronics.

15/03/08: CAPT Awards Women in Aviation Scholarship

San Diego, California - (March 15, 2008) Commercial Airline Pilot Training (CAPT) Program announced that it has awarded their annual Women in Aviation scholarship to Yuko Hasegawa of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The award was given during the 19th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference in San Diego, California. “As anyone taking flight training knows, the cost of fees and books and materials expenses is daunting,” said Hasegawa, in appreciation of the award. “The scholarship I received from the Women in Aviation-Commercial Airline Pilot Training is essential in helping me achieve my goals.” The CAPT-Women in Aviation Scholarship includes a commercial/multi-engine/instrument review course (academics and flight) in a crew concept environment with the student culminating 24 hours in a transport category-type Flight Training Device. Upon successful completion of the course, the recipient will be eligible for employment through CAPT’s partnering airlines. The scholarship is valued at $22,495.

22/02/08: Qantas Creates 2,000 New Flying Jobs

Sydney, 22 February 2008 - Qantas said today it would hire 900 new long haul flight attendants by the end of 2008 in the first phase of its largest ever cabin crew recruitment drive. The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said the airline would continue to build its full- time flight attendant numbers through to 2010 to cater for the airline’s growth. “By the end of 2010, we will have around 2,000 new flight attendants flying on our international fleet of A380, B747 and A330 aircraft,” he said. Mr Dixon said Qantas’ subsidiary company Qantas Cabin Crew Australia (QCCA) was currently processing thousands of applications from a wide range of candidates.

10/10/07: Northrop Grumman’s KC-30 Tanker Team Will Create Aerospace Jobs and Generate Economic Activity of $135 Million Annually in Ohio

MELBOURNE, Fla., Oct. 11, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) — Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE:NOC) KC-30 Tanker team will generate economic activity and create more than 2,300 direct and indirect jobs in Ohio if the KC-30 Tanker aircraft is selected by the U.S. Air Force. Northrop Grumman, EADS, GE Aviation and the KC-30 supply chain in Ohio currently support 14,500 jobs statewide and generate a combined economic activity exceeding $13 billion annually. “Ohio is not only home to GE Aviation, but also home to the KC-30 Tanker’s CF6 engines,” said Russ Sparks, vice president of military systems for GE Aviation, headquartered in Cincinnati. “The KC-30 supply chain in Ohio is vast and builds upon the rich heritage of aerospace excellence in our state. 19/09/07: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Saint Louis University to Host Safety Management Systems (SMS) in Aviation Conference

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Saint Louis University’s Parks College will co-host their first Safety Management Systems (SMS) in Aviation Conference. The conference will be held on January 6-9, 2008, in Daytona Beach, Florida on the Embry-Riddle campus. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has mandated that all its member states develop and implement Safety Management Systems (SMS) throughout their aviation industries. Other countries, such as the U.K. and Canada, have made SMS mandatory for their operators. In the U.S. the FAA has declared that SMS is voluntary for now, but has not ruled out making it mandatory for certain operators (SMS will be required for 14 CFR Part 139 certificated airports). In the meantime, the FAA has issued an Advisory Circular (120-92) and several guidance documents regarding SMS program development and implementation.

13/11/06: SWISS continues steady expansion of its aircraft fleet - 550 new jobs

SWISS continues to climb and to follow its course towards profitable and sustainable growth. In addition to the two further Airbus A330s whose acquisition has already been communicated, Switzerland’s airline should be adding three more Airbus A340 aircraft to its long-haul fleet within the next two years. With the arrival of all five transports, SWISS will operate a fleet of 23 long-haul aircraft. In the last few months, the airline has already announced gradual fleet expansions through the addition of the two A330s and three more short-haul transports. SWISS has created the scope for these investments, and for the sustainable growth they should help achieve, by successfully conducting its corporate restructuring over the past two years.
