The European Space Agency is Europe's gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe. ESA has 15 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. ESA's job is to draw up the European space programme and carry it through. The Agency's projects are designed to find out more about the Earth, its immediate space environment, the solar system and the Universe, as well as to develop satellite-based technologies and services, and to promote European industries. ESA also works closely with space organisations outside Europe to share the benefits of space with the whole of mankind. ESA has its headquarters in Paris and it is here that policies and programmes are decided upon. However, ESA also has centres in Europe, each of which has different responsibilities.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) landed men on the moon; now they want to do things "better, faster, cheaper." NASA was created in 1958, partly in response to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik. Ironically, The Russian Space Agency now is one of NASA's chief partners in the troubled $60 billion International Space Station, which houses astronauts conducting space research. NASA also runs the Space Shuttle program and launches unmanned satellites and probes to explore the solar system. Strapped for funding (the agency gets less than 1% of total federal spending) and troubled with cost overruns, NASA is seeking private industry's help in developing cheaper and safer space travel. Kennedy Space Center is the starting point for America's human space flights. It is from KSC that NASA sends astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). Each element is processed at KSC before being delivered and attached to the International Space Station. Kennedy Space Center will support American space goals by continuing its legacy as the foremost launch facility in the world. The Crew Exploration Vehicle, NASA's next generation of manned spacecraft, will take astronauts to the International Space Station and onward into the reaches of the solar system. In addition to supporting human space flight, KSC also coordinates all launches of NASA payloads on expendable launch vehicles, whether those launches take place at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, or other launch sites. KSC has established itself for more than 40 years as a world-class Spaceport Technology Center. It has much to contribute to the development of future launch vehicles that will bring people and supplies to the ISS and to manned research facilities throughout the solar system. (Back to top)

Marshall Space Center (MSC)
Website: www.nasa.gov/centers/marshall
The Marshall Space Flight Center is one of NASA's largest and most diversified installations. The Marshall Center has been a key contributor to numerous significant NASA programs during the Agency's 45-plus-year history -from the 1961 flight of the first U.S. astronaut into space, to the Apollo missions exploring the Moon, to development and operation of America's Space Shuttle fleet, and construction of and scientific discovery aboard the International Space Station. Today, the Marshall Center is again contributing its collective expertise, ingenuity and energy as NASA and the nation begin carrying out the Vision for Space Exploration, which seeks to extend human presence across the Solar System -- starting with a human return to the Moon in preparation for human exploration of Mars and other destinations. Engineers and scientists at the Marshall Center use state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to accomplish NASA's mission. Marshall manages the key propulsion hardware and technologies of the Space Shuttle, develops the next generation of space transportation and propulsion systems, oversees science and hardware development for the International Space Station, and handles a variety of associated scientific endeavors to benefit space exploration and improve life here on Earth. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency is to be born on October 1, 2003, merging the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (NAL), and the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA).The official English name, "Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)", represents our enthusiasm not only for exploration but also for broader activities including research and development by the use of the word "exploration". In the new logo, "A" for "Aerospace" is designed as a star to symbolize "hope", "pride", and an "exploratory mind", and to signify a guidepost pointing to our future. It reflects our hope for JAXA to be a star of Japan and for all of human society, as well as to shine brightly. (Back to top)
