31/08/06: QinetiQ delivers successful Joint/Allied NEC ‘Cursor on Target’ Trials: A network enabled machine to machine, ‘effects delivery’ demonstration

QinetiQ, acting as consortium lead, has successfully delivered the Cursor on Target (CoT) project, a demonstration of network enabled tactical communications between different friendly forces, in a joint networked air-land (NAiL) environment. This Network Enabled Capability (NEC) demonstration was commissioned by the MOD Capability Manager (Information Superiority), managed by the MOD Air Command and Control Systems (ACCS) IPT and supported by the US National Reconnaissance Office. The delivery partnership also included Front Line UK and NATO Commands, DSTL, General Dynamics (UK), SAIC/VTC and US Allies and linked ‘sensors to deciders and effectors’ to deliver a number of desired tactical combat scenarios. These were played out in real time and included: suppression of enemy air defences, close air support and air power show of force.

Tactical helicopter aviators from 427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron (SOAS) have just returned from a major exercise in Kamloops, British Columbia proving once and for all that life in the Canadian Forces can change on a dime. Until last February Maj Travis (last name protected), Aviation Detachment Commander for the exercise, was a 1 Wing Air Force pilot supporting Land Force and routine Air Force missions with the CH-146 Griffon helicopter. Although his job as a tactical helicopter pilot was always to fly missions in support of the Army, among other things, this is different.

31/08/06: Canada’s Air Force returns from successful exercise off the shores of Hawaii

The twentieth edition of Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIIMPAC) has drawn to close and crews have made their way back to their respective bases across Canada. RIMPAC is a U.S. Navy sponsored maritime exercise, which takes place every two years based in the Hawaiian Islands over a 4-week period. Canadian Forces were able to participate along side other nations including Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United States.

30/08/06: CAE awarded C-130 AMP contract from Boeing

(Tampa, Fla., August 30, 2006) — (NYSE: CGT; TSX: CAE) - CAE has been awarded an initial subcontract valued at more than US$22 million (C$25 million) by the Boeing Company to begin the design and development of upgrades and new training devices for the U.S. Air Force C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP). The subcontract from Boeing calls for CAE to upgrade an existing C-130H Weapon Systems Trainer located at Pope Air Force Base (AFB) and deliver the upgraded simulator in a C-130 AMP configuration to Little Rock AFB in early 2009. CAE will also upgrade an existing C-130 Cockpit Familiarization Trainer, Cockpit Procedures Trainer, and Fuselage Trainer to the C-130 AMP configuration, as well as design and manufacture a new C-130 AMP Avionics Part Task Trainer. CAE will work closely with Boeing, the C-130 AMP prime contractor, and Lockheed Martin, the C-130 Aircrew Training System prime contractor, to install and test all C-130 training system modifications.

30/08/06: A Significant extension to the international terminal at Helsinki-Vantaa airport

Finavia will begin work during mid September on an extension to the international terminal at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and on the construction of a new baggage handling centre. The extended section will mainly be used for traffic to the Far East and the building work is due for completion in the autumn of 2009. Once the extension is complete, there will be eight passenger loading bridges suitable for wide-bodied aircraft at Helsinki-Vantaa instead of the current five. Only two of the current bridges can accommodate the new Airbus A340 and A350 aircraft.
