28/12/05: First Galileo satellite on orbit to demonstrate key technologies

The first Galileo demonstrator is in orbit, marking the very first step to full operability of Europe’s new global navigation satellite system, under a partnership between ESA and the European Commission (EC) . Giove A, the first Galileo in-orbit validation element, was launched today from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, atop a Soyuz-Fregat vehicle operated by Starsem. Following a textbook lift-off at 05:19 UTC (06:19 CET), the Fregat upper stage performed a series of manoeuvres to reach a circular orbit at an altitude of 23 258 km, inclined at 56 degrees to the Equator, before safely deploying the satellite at 09:01:39 UTC (10:01:39 CET).

Tokyo, December 27, 2005: A special committee of outside experts established to consult and advise Japan Airlines on safety issues has presented the results of their examination and recommendations. The five-member committee was set up in August this year in response to a proposal made to JAL by the Japanese Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) on June 17, 2005.

23/12/05: NASA Astronomes spor rare lunar meteor strike

Astronomers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala., have recorded a small but powerful meteoroid strike in the night on the moon’s surface. On Nov. 7, using a 10-inch-diameter telescope, astronomers recorded a tiny blip northwest of Mare Imbrium, the moon’s “Sea of Showers.” Such impacts are not uncommon, but it was only in 1999 that scientists first recorded a lunar strike as it happened.

built by Alcatel Alenia Space

Alcatel Alenia Space applauds the successful launch of the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG2) satellite designed to provide operational weather observations and environmental monitoring throughout Europe. The satellite has been successfully launched yesterday by an Ariane 5 rocket from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana. Built by Alcatel Alenia Space as prime contractor, MSG2 is the second new generation satellite in a series of four to be boosted into geostationary orbit.
